"Lovett's Lights" is NOT a translation of the Gospel of John. It is a paraphrase. Where two or three words are needed to bring forward the meaning from the original language, a paraphrase gives one that liberty. You cannot do that with a strict translation. With translators restricted to English equivalents for the Greek, they often find no way to express what the Holy Spirit is trying to say because the Greek language is far more flexible than English. A paraphrase allows you to use as many words as necessary to make the meaning clear. After every few verses of text, you will come upon one or more insightful paragraphs identified with a capitalized word from the text. These are the "LIGHTS." Their purpose is to reveal the hidden meanings and show how they relate to other great truths of the Bible. Background information such as customs of the time and the way certain words were used in Bible times are included where they provide a key to interpretation. You may see comments and notes scattered strategically throughout the book. They are intended to allow the author to expand or comment on some things possibly not in the text.
