Great introduction to the history of the church in South Africa - Holger Szesnat, Cambridge
This is the third edition of this classic work by John de Gruchy, Robert Selby Taylor Professor of Christian Studies (emeritus) at the University of Cape Town. Following its first publication in 1979, and a useful revision in 1986, it now sports a further revision plus an added chapter by de Gruchy's son, Steve de Gruchy (Professor in the School of Theology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal), which takes the historical overview through the final stages of the apartheid regime and the emergence of democracy in South Africa. The book is a concise introduction to the history and theology of the difficult struggles of the church in South Africa as it battled to come to terms (and deal) with racism and apartheid. Whether you need the historical broad sweep, or specific information about the early history of the church on the southern tip of Africa, or something about more recent events such as Black theology in the 1970's, or the famous Kairos Document (1985), this is a great starting point for your research.
