Find Out MoreThe Didache by Thomas O'Loughlin was published by SPCK in August 2010 and is our 44927th best seller. The ISBN for The Didache is 9780281059539.
The Didache is one of the earliest Christian writings, almost certainly earlier than any of the New Testament texts. Its text was lost for centuries and rediscovered in the late nineteenth century, since when it has provided an insight into some of the thinking and practice of the early Church. The Greek word ‘didache’ means ‘teaching’ and, as such, the text of The Didache provides a guide for Christian living in sixteen distinct parts.
O’Loughlin has provided an important and thorough introduction that opens a window on the manner in which early Christians conducted themselves. In effect it is a commentary on the text which itself is provided in a modern translation at the end of the book. Also included is a list for further reading, an index of biblical and ancient texts and, usefully, a comprehensive index to the book.
Although at times somewhat heavy going (at least for this reviewer) the book provides a very helpful and useful introduction to the text, and will be of great value to anyone seeking a fuller understanding of life in those far off early churches.
