Primary school children are discovering the adventure of reaching out beyond their homes and themselves. They usually like a lot of activity and they look for action and reaction. They need to see that the Church is alive and that it shares their concerns and their interest in life. It is our privilege to share with them as they seek to extend themselves and discover their responsibilities. We need to ensure that they grow in their faith and that they have a living relationship with their God. They need to discover that they are part of the Scripture story.
The Lamps teaching in the Searchlights programme is designed to reflect the needs of this age group. For each week of the year there is an aim clearly set out, readings from the Bible, a teaching idea to read as written or adapt as fits the ability of the teacher. The worksheet, which is easily photocopiable, uses cartoon drawings and stylised writing to attract this age group and is just waiting to be coloured in, an activity such as a game and a prayer finishes off the session. There is also space for any notes the teacher might want to make. All of these activities are specifically designed to appeal to primary school children?s imaginations and concerns; it is also firmly rooted in the Sunday readings of Common Worship, Year A.
