Next We Shall SingMartin Brasier, via The Good Book Stall
I'd rather discuss the issues Tony Jasper raises and put my own opinions forward than review the book... which means, I think, that the author has succeeded in his main objective. Next Shall We Sing is a very personal and often autobiographical tour of preferences and prejudices, derived from an extensive and long experience. Parts of the tour are for hymn nerds - I could happily argue all day over the "which tunes for which hymns" chapter, but you'll be continually looking things up if names like Kingsfold, Hereford, Miles Lane and so on don't bring tunes instantly to mind.
The author clearly has a strong love for traditional hymns, and is very dismissive of all that he lumps together as "praise music", but as the book develops the ideas become more complex, challenging and radical. A recurring theme is that what we sing in church should connect our everyday experience to the Divine.
Having criticised hymn book compilers at various points throughout the book, he devotes the final chapter to playing "fantasy hymn book" - a fitting conclusion, and a task with which an increasing number of us engage. With our data projectors, LCD screens and song management software, we are all hymn book compilers now, and it does no harm to be reminded of the responsibility that goes with it.
This is a challenging (but very readable) book for all leaders involved with music for worship - even "praise band" leaders! Your responses to some of the issues raised may be different to those of the author, but they are issues which we should all have thought through if we are doing our jobs properly. At a minimum, this book will force you to re-examine and re-evaluate some of your own views in the light of the author's arguments. A worthwhile read.
