JonahBarry Vendy, via The Good Book Stall
The Book of Jonah is seen as a parable, rather than history. That pleases this reviewer! But some readers may struggle with Burrows’ use of the formula, ‘Once upon a time…’
Burrows takes Jesus’ mention of the ‘sign of Jonah’ (Matthew 12.39-41) to mean not only the Lord’s three-day ‘sojourn in death’, but also God’s desire to save the Gentiles.
While I appreciated the sections on repentance and humility, I did find this a very idiosyncratic reflection on Jonah, ‘high priest for the Gentile sailors’, willing sacrifice, suffering servant, remnant of Israel. His descent into the fish’s belly becomes Israel’s descent into exile. Far fetched? Or am I blinkered?
