Full Product Description
The Bible is clear that Spirit-filled illuminated preaching takes place in two parts
- One, the Holy Spirit illumines the preacher's heart as he studies and meditates upon his biblical text, resulting in personal convictions and deep abiding affections over the Word.
- Two, once illumined, the preacher now conveys these truths to his hearers, while maintaining a deep reliance upon the text he is preaching, in hopes that the Spirit of God will likewise illumine the hearts of his hearers through the agency of the Word of God preached.
Jeffrey Crotts draws out this seemingly forgotten, misplaced doctrine called illumination and applies it to the preacher, by defining it from Scripture with testimonies of men from church history woven through declaring its immense value. You will find a developed synthesized biblical theology of illumination, focusing on four main categories of illumination found in 2 Corinthians 4:1-6: Condemnation, Communication, Conversion, and Convictions, all illustrated by men like Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Owen, and Jonathan Edwards, along with present-day definitions and scholarship.
Preachers who long for illumination during their personal study and preaching should plan to be enriched as they read to apply this bible-soaked, historically documented work on the priceless doctrine we call illumination.
Illuminated preaching by Jeffrey Crotts was published by Day One in January 2010 and is our 47564th best seller. The ISBN for Illuminated preaching is 9781846251665.

Illuminated PreachingAlan Hill, via The Good Book Stall
This is a book aimed at preachers. It is about the Holy Spirit’s vital role in unveiling God’s word. The author calls this ‘illumination’. Six chapters concentrate on the Holy Spirit’s work on the people in the pews and one chapter focuses on His work on the men in the pulpits.
Jeffrey Crofts begins by showing that unless the Holy Spirit is at work in the hearers’ heart the Bible will remain a closed book. Using 2 Corinthians 4: 1 to 6 as his scriptural basis, the author identifies four categories of the Holy Spirit’s work in the congregation: condemnation, communication, conversion and convictions. The author then looks at each of these areas in turn. The chapter on conversion is the best. Here he emphasises that unless the Holy Spirit illuminates a person, that person will never be saved. He says “Simply put, God creates light in people’s hearts”. How true!
The chapter on the Holy Spirit and the preacher emphasises that the preacher needs the help of the Holy Spirit in his preparation as well as in his delivery. Jeffrey Crofts concludes: “Preach the word – but only after having first been illuminated.”
This slim book will help, encourage and humble those called to preach. It will also help all believers better understand the work of the Holy Spirit.
