Christ and EvolutionDavid Thomson, via The Good Book Stall
This substantial book aims to provide a theological response to the issues raised by Darwinian theories of evolution. It does this not by engaging in anti-Dawkins argument, but by accepting the findings of less strident science, and then seeking to build a Christ-centred theology that takes them seriously. In particular she worries at the bone of what a theology looks like that treats humankind as an evolving rather than a static species, in fundamental continuity with the rest of animate creation. Deane-Drummond draws heavily on von Balthasar and Bulgakov so this is not an easy read. The theology works with imagery and drama rather than proposition and simple narrative. I read its fundamental logic as being that first we must encounter Christ in wonder; and second we must engage with Christ as Wisdom. Only thirdly are we in a position to reflect and write more analytically about it. The author argues here for a Christology which is not about God giving up some attributes (which are not human attributes) but being fully present in Jesus’ human life, as divine wisdom integrated with creaturely wisdom. There is much more … but you will have to dig for yourself, and this is a book for those with the time and resources to go digging.
