When Barnabas was a child, his name was Joses - but later on he was given the name Barnabas because that name meant encourager. Barnabas was very good at encouraging people! He encouraged many believers to keep following Jesus.

You can read about Barnabas in the Bible in the book of Acts.

One of a series of fifteen titles concentrating on well known figures from the Bible. Click on the publisher, to see the complete list on their website. As the publisher says ‘a pocket money price’ and this would be an ideal collection for any child. The illustrations accurately portray the story and together with the words tell much of what we know about the main character, Barnabas in this case. Barnabas was the one who befriended Saul after his conversion on the road to Damascus. It was he who spoke up for him to the elders in Jerusalem. It was he who gave Saul (Paul in the Greek language) encouragement and help with the Christians in Antioch and elsewhere. I liked the way their very human disagreement over John Mark was told and how in later years Saul acknowledged Barnabas’ encouragement to himself and John Mark.
