The Bible documents every sinful mistake Israelites made over millennia. The Bible is a spiritual book and a public, wartime document between our Leader and His soldiers. GOD knows everyone (including Team Satan) will read it to figure out His plans. He did not intend it to be perfectly clear and tell Team Satan how He plans to win the war. GOD is a Master Strategist. Like Dr. Michael Heiser teaches, Jesus outsmarted Team Satan by picking a fight and getting them to kill Him as GOD’s perfect sacrifice for our sins. Paul says they never would have done it had they known it would cause their defeat. Looking backward, we can see that Jesus perfectly fulfilled Biblical prophesy but it was part of GOD’s plan that no one could figure it out ahead of time.

GOD is our Bible decoder. Without Him helping us to interpret the Bible, we are as perplexed and confused as our enemy is. Hermeneutics is an imperfect way to study the Bible. This is why we need to follow our living Savior. Jesus is the Commander of GOD’s army who communicates battle plans directly to us and uses the Bible to confirm their authenticity from Him. Imagine a world where we all follow Jesus’ personal instructions. He promises that His sheep can hear His voice. Our fight will look like a synchronized dance choreographed by GOD where we line-dance and doe-c-doe with friends & strangers alike because we are all following His lead.

A secret key to decoding the Bible is Jesus’ Model. When we read the Bible, we should picture GOD teaching us to prioritize loving Him and others as Jesus did. A Bible passage that leads us to draw a different conclusion should trigger our suspicion that we are missing the point.

Jesus demonstrated how to live life connected to GOD by prayer, obedience, and devotion. It was a two-way relationship, not a religion. Andy Stanley teaches that the Christian brand we are practicing now is a Temple Model like all religions. We might say we love others, but we are mostly concerned about ourselves. It is about our view of GOD. We see GOD as a strict legalist that condemns homosexuals. We don’t want GOD to see us act cozy with them and risk any condemnation splashing on us. Condemning homosexuals and same-sex marriage is a defensive act of a religion that has a distorted view of who GOD is as a person.

Jesus is GOD. He is irresistible and radically inclusive! Jesus told us that when we see Him, we have seen His Father. The clearer we see Jesus, the clearer we see His Father. Jesus didn’t fear being caught by GOD loving sinners because He knew GOD and was aligned with His plans, priorities, passions, and perspectives. Aligning ourselves with Jesus can help us quickly and expertly navigate through this controversy to a powerful and unified position. A position that can establish Team Jesus as a culturally relevant source of justice in this world.

Jesus’ Model works on fixing me not others. Jesus was tougher on Himself (perfect and without sin) than He was on others. The world does the exact opposite: we give grace to ourselves (since we know the extenuating circumstances) and we hold others to high standards (since they should know better). I wrote this book to remove this obstacle between us and Jesus.

The correct standard we should be striving towards is to act, speak, and love like Jesus. Team Jesus should be radically inclusive and irresistible like Him.
