I lived for two years in a dusty village near the coast of Kenya, East Africa. I went with some thought of bringing change to the Duruma people, but in the end I was changed as much or more than anyone else. Each chapter of "The Trees Were Spinning" tells a short story or two from my time there, and reveals a facet of their culture (and often my own as well). Through the book you can follow my own growth and the humble lessons of life that I learned, and the joy and struggles of living as a stranger in a strange land.
