      Product Description

To mark the 50th anniversary in 2012 of the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral after its destruction by incendiary bombs in November 1940, this lavishly illustrated volume celebrates a unique church with a unique mission. The decision to rebuild the Cathedral was taken the morning after the bombing - not as an act of defiance, but one of faith, trust and hope for the future of the world. This lavishly illustrated volume tells the story of every aspect the Cathedral's life:its architecture in war and in peace, its theology, worship and spirituality, music and the arts, its mission and ministry, its place in the life of the city, the Cathedral as a place of reconciliation, its people over the decades and its life today Co-published with the Friends of Coventry Cathedral, this celebratory volume is a record of a how a 900-year old cathedral rose from the ashes of violent destruction to become a symbol of reconciliation and to develop a unique mission among Britain's churches.

      Reconciling People: Coventry Cathedral’s Story

Not just the story of a Cathedral as in one of the popular guide books, but hardly surprising when we are talking of Coventry Cathedral, the first newly built cathedral in post-war Britain and a building symbolic of the horrors of World War II and the resulting destruction across Europe. The book covers not just the reconstruction of this iconic memorial, but also much more about its life, meaning and message. There are a range of contributors both clergy and lay, so their contributions cover many aspects from many angles. The aspects you would expect about the re-construction, but also about the city itself; the life of a cathedral, not only the liturgy, theology, music, ecumenism, but the practical tasks from embroidery to chair repairs. Then, as to be expected, the massive ministry of reconciliation that has become a symbol of the Cathedral and which has spread in both practical and spiritual means across Europe and beyond. A book to give hope and an incentive to work for peace.
