The Qumran Psalter: The Thanksgiving Hymns Among the Dead Sea Scrolls

    Today's Price £26.60

    Product Description

In 68 CE, devout Jews left more than one thousand handwritten documents in caves northwest of the Dead Sea. The cave that most defined the beliefs and hopes of these Jews is Cave I. In it were placed many manuscripts, including two copies of the Qumran Psalter or Thanksgiving Hymns. In 1947, Bedouin shepherds found Cave I and retrieved scrolls, including a copy of the Qumran Psalter. It proves Jews created new psalms to complement the Davidic Psalter (the "Psalms" usually attributed to David). We learn for the first time how Jews prior to Hillel and Jesus imagined the universe, articulated unworthiness, and despite suffering were devoted to God's covenant. One author imagines that though his ear was inattentive to God's words he felt a message penetrate his being so that his stone heart palpitated. Throughout and especially in the Self-Glorification Hymn, the authors express transcendence, and a oneness with angels through God's continuing acts of compassion and acceptance. Though confessing unworthiness, the authors thank the Lord for forgiving those who turn from transgression; this theme is the keynote of the symphonic poetry. Jews, Christians, and all interested in spirituality will find insight and comfort studying these psalms and poems.

This book is not faithful to the original text and the author does not convey the existential angst that the original conveys. The 13th psalm is using the conventional psalm 8 which begins "they made my life like a ship on the sea" and the celestial child that the woman is bringing to birth which other writers recognise (i.e. Danilou) is misssing it is just an ordinary woman with this copy. The original must be understood like Simeons message to Mary "and a sword will pierce your own soul" this is the context of the original and the woman is the Holy Spirit bringing to birth a celestial child (Luke 20:34-38) The Holy Spirit is feminine to these people and the Visitation that the whole group are praying for is a divine impregnation. according to the Exegesis on the soul "The sages that came before us gave the soul a feminine name. She is also feminine in nature, and she also has a womb. therefore the soul in males and females is female, St Ephraim the Syrian continues the Christian understanding in him Hymn. "If by God's Holy Ghost thou art beguiled, There will be born in thee the eternal child. If it's like Mary, virginal and pure, then God will impreganate your soul for sure. God make me pregnant, and his Spirit shadow me , that God may rise up in my soul and shatter me. What good does Gabriel's "Ave Mary" do unles he gives me that same greeting too?
