The New You versus the Old You: The Misconception of Transition

How does one undo decades of innate habits and tendencies? How does one change his or hers internal conditioning? This is what 2 Corinthians 5:17 should make us ask ourselves. The transition from our old self to our new self in Christ is fundamental and foundational for every Christian, whether newly saved or have been in the body of Christ for many years. Yet this idea of transition has been misunderstood and wrongly assumed that it should happen automatically. Could this be the reason why the church has focused on our buildings, our programs, our events and laid aside building relationships, one-on-one mentorship, and discipleship (Matthew 28:19-20)? It would seem to be impossible to build a strong local "ecclesia" with faithful, committed, mature saints without true discipleship.

Many have been comfortable as being Sunday-only Christians rather than developing a "koinonia" with God and with one another. Done right, a process such as this will usher an end to the days of the "revolving-door Christianity" and Christians who are easily swayed by anything new that tickles their ears.
