Top 10 Max Lucado

Max Lucado has spent the last 40 years telling the story of God’s grace in books. He is a gifted storyteller with a soothing style that invites the reader in and quietly challenges their perceptions. His breadth stretches from Easter devotionals to heartwarming Children’s books; from researched social responses to prayer collections.

It’s difficult to whittle down 40 years of work, over countless books into a top 10, but humour us as we pick our favourites and share a quote from each:

1. Anxious for Nothing

This book has hardly left the bestseller list from its release in October 2017. Using Philippians 4:6-7 Max guides the reader with warmth and insight, leading them to a full and happy life free of anxiety. He focuses in on areas of perseverance, meditation, prayer and hope.

Max is passionate about alleviating the problem of stress and anxiety in 21st Century society. Alongside Anxious for Nothing, Max also released Less Fret, More Faith - an 11-week action plan for overcoming anxiety and Trade Your Cares for Calm, an inspirational little book of encouragements.

“This much is sure: contagious calm will happen to the degree that we turn to him”

2. Before Amen

With this highly-readable, highly-transformative book the well loved master storyteller shares with you the secrets of effective, life-enhancing prayer.

In Before Amen, Max Lucado shows the power of simple prayer and in doing so helps you breathe in heaven and exhale God to all you meet in your daily life.

“You are never more like Jesus than when you pray for others.”

3. Miracle at The Higher Grounds Cafe

Max Lucado's 'Miracle At The Higher Grounds Cafe' is an allegorical novel about love, forgiveness and a coffee shop where lives are healed and transformed.

In turn both heartbreaking and joyous, this heavenly novel is a wonderfully compact story. This easy read can be enjoyed in one sitting and then read again and again.

“Each star, numbered. Each star, named! Like every grain of sand. Every hair on his head. Every trouble that filled his day. Created. Numbered. Known.”

4. In the Grip of Grace

Focussing on his favourite topic of Grace, Lucado encourages the reader to become love-driven instead of self-propelled, and to see the impact this will have upon your life!

He challenges the reader to step out of their comfort zone, but reassures them that God’s arms will always catch them.

“Our God is abundant in love and steadfast in mercy. He saves us, not because we trust in a symbol, but because we trust in a Savior.”

5. And the Angels Were Silent

We’re not alone in rating this title, Max’s Easter classic has sold more than 700,000 copies since its first printing. In “And the Angels Were Silent”, Max masterfully recounts Jesus’ final journey, inviting readers along for the ride. For by observing his, we may learn not only how to make ours but also what matters most to God.

“The cross, the zenith of history. All of the past pointed to it, and all of the future would depend upon it.”

6. Glory Days

Behind the shiny cover hides a wealth of wisdom and knowledge. Glory Days invites readers to leave the rut they're stuck in and discover a life defined by grace, refined by challenge, and aligned with a heavenly call.

By studying the life of Joshua and the biblical book that bears his name, Lucado reveals God's promises for every step and reminds readers that God still fights for them.

“Nothing has a greater impact on spiritual growth than a reflection on Scripture.”

7. Travelling Light

Even the title sounds comforting, doesn’t it? Using the twenty-third Psalm as a guide, Max encourages us to release the burdens we were never intended to bear: worry, discontentment, fear.

“You need someone to lift your spirits. You need someone to look you in the face and say, "This isn't the end. Don't give up. There is a better place than this. And I'll lead you there.”

8.You’ll Get Through This

You’ll Get Through This is a powerful reminder of God’s promise and provides hope and help in times of trouble.

Written in his trademark style, Max provides a gentle but clear reminder that with God there is nothing we can't endure.

“You'll get through this. It won't be painless. It won't be quick. But God will use this mess for good.”

9. You Are Special

It would be impossible to talk about Max’s work without mentioning the adorable Wemmicks.

In You Are Special, Max Lucado conveys a vital message for children everywhere: that they are special in God's eyes. But it’s a message that extends far beyond childhood and offers poignant reminders to adults too.

“Remember, you are special because I made you. And I don't make mistakes.”

10. He Chose the Nails

A powerful reminder for Easter and beyond. Max Lucado looks with warm speculation upon the cross and what it means for all humanity.

Max examines the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion, revealing the claims of the cross and asserting that if they are true, then Christianity itself is true.

“The same hand that stilled the seas stills your guilt. The same hand that cleansed the Temple cleanses your heart. The hand is the hand of God. The nail is the nail of God. And as the hands of Jesus opened for the nail, the doors of heaven opened for you.”
