The Alpha Course has been active for over 30 years and provides an opportunity to explore the Christian faith in an informal setting. The courses currently run at a variety of locations including churches, gyms, offices, prisons and residential homes, which all feature around the world. The courses usually last for around 10 weeks with each session having a topic. The Alpha Courses are small groups of people, with either one or two leaders encouraging discussion, which can last up to 2 hours. It is a course set up for those who may not be traditional in their means of Christianity and may not attend church regularly. What the Alpha Course does, is it allows people to search for answers and explore the world of Christianity.

The Alpha Course is an extraordinary opportunity designed for people who don’t necessarily visit church regularly and is open to all who would be curious to attend. There are many diversities and ranges of people that attend the Alpha Course, all with similar or different reasons. It is designed to aid people in their curiosities of many things religious, to learn the basics of Christianity or to simply ask questions that have been going around in your head for a long time. With many different viewpoints from many different characters, the Alpha Course is a wonderful environment to explore religion and issues.

The Beginning of the Alpha Course

The Alpha Course has continues to grow, since its original birth in the late 1970's. Twenty-six years down the line and the Alpha Course has expanded into a hugely popular learning vehicle. Originally started in the Holy Trinity Brompton in London, UK, the course set out to teach about Christianity to new Christians in a relaxed and informal manner.

The Alpha Course's growth was prominent in the early 1990's as it was clear that the course was helpful to many people regarding the Christian faith. This simple but effective idea was extended to non-churchgoers as this was an ideal environment to introduce people to Christianity, in a relaxed manner.

Before the millennium, the Alpha Course had spread across the entire UK and soon after, onto the international stage. From the beginning, the Alpha Course had been an idea, a way of learning and teaching and has now accumulated over 33,000 courses worldwide and is present in over 160 countries. Supported by all the major denominations, the Alpha Course is a fantastic environment for both people with experience of Christianity and those who have non.

What Happens at an Alpha Course?

Alpha Course What Happens Based around small groups, the Alpha Course provides refreshments and meals for the participating members. Around 12 people make up each group with an initial stage to get to know the others in the group. Taking place every week, the Alpha Course discusses different topics about the Christian faith and then there is time to break off into separate groups and have in depth talks about the issues raised and questions asked. The idea of the group situation is to explore and discover knowledge that many do not possess and to voice your opinion about certain issues in a very relaxed and informal environment.

Lasting for around 10 weeks, the Alpha Course offers the chance to go away for a day or weekend to help people discover what they are searching for. The courses can take place in the morning or afternoon, normally lasting for an hour so to meet the need of working people, but there are also evening classes, which last for around 2 hours. The Alpha Course is completely free and humbly accepts contributions for the food available.
