The Archer and the Arrow
Full Product Description
'My aim is to preach the gospel by prayerfully expounding the Bible to the people God has given me to love.'
Join Phillip Jensen and Paul Grimmond as they explore each phrase in this carefully wrought statement, and show not only why faithful, powerful, biblical preaching is so important, but how to go about it.
Phillip Jensen has been preaching God's word for almost four decades. The purpose of this book is to pass on some of the wisdom that he has gained during that time - not so that preachers can become like him, but so that they may be encouraged and inspired to love Jesus and to preach his words to a world that so desperately needs them.
Colin Marshall, author of the best-selling The Trellis and the Vine says, "The disciple-making vision of The Trellis and the Vine will only be realised through the kind of fearless, Bible-driven proclamation of the gospel that has been the hallmark of Phillip Jensen's ministry. For over 20 years I watched him train a generation of young preachers during their ministry apprenticeship. This brilliant book now distils this wisdom for every preacher and would-be preacher."
The Archer and the Arrow by Philip D. Jensen and Paul Grimmond was published by Matthias Media in September 2010 and is our 22527th best seller. The ISBN for The Archer and the Arrow is 9781921441806.

The Archer and the ArrowSteve Langford, via The Good Book Stall
In The Archer and the Arrow Phillip D. Jensen and Paul Grimmond provide a solid introduction to the art of preaching. Beginning with a clear description of Gospel preaching, Jensen and Grimmond take the reader from reading a Bible passage to producing a sermon that is both evangelical in nature and true to the message at the heart of the Biblical text. Using the illustration of the arrow as a method of carrying the Gospel message from preacher to listener works well as it provides a number of hooks upon which Jensen and Grimmond are able to hang their thoughts. For example, the description of the arrow being made up of a head, shaft and feathers provides the authors with the opportunity to speak of three stages to the producing a sermon: The Gospel message, the exegetical process and the underlying theology of the preacher. As an experienced preacher I appreciated The Archer and the Arrow as a useful introduction to preaching and would happily recommend it to someone starting out on their preaching ministry.

"Preaching is the lifeblood of the local church. God not only forms his church through his word, he also grows, strengthens and matures his church through his word. This is an outstanding book by one of the world’s foremost preachers. It is essential reading for any would-be Bible teacher."
William Taylor, Rector, St Helen’s Bishopsgate, London, UK
"Phillip Jensen has been both faithfully and provocatively preaching God's word for decades. Here he tells us how. His observations are keen, his suggestions convicting, his speaking plain."
Mark Dever, Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington DC, USA
"This book is gold, and gives us decades of prayer and thought and practice in how to preach the Scriptures as the very words of God."
Al Stewart, Director, Evangelism Ministries (New Churches), Sydney, Australia
"Having gained so much from Phillip Jensen's preaching, I am delighted that his thoughts and instruction on the preacher's task are now in print. They are characteristically rooted in Scripture, radical, challenging and inspring, and will be a great help to all preachers - from the novice to the veteran."
