SignedMary Bartholomew, via The Good Book Stall
Two stories interweave in this absorbing read. Louis and his childhood friend are now at university in Aberdeen, and despite their years of friendship, these two budding writers are poles apart. Derryk seems to have become a different person, stealing Louis’ story ideas, causing distress and heartache. He tells lies about Louis with unforeseen results.
Louis’ make believe country of Alphabetania is very easy to become involved with. Lord Omicron rules the land under the guiding hand of ‘The Righteous One’ and his twelve helpers. ‘The Righteous One’ is the author of all things and while his people heed his words, all is well but someone somewhere is spreading rumours, lies about a group of people who under their leader Lord Sigmarho have moved away from the main centre of population to expand into new areas.
Alon, Lord Omicron’s teenage son becomes more and more aware of the destructive forces of these lies and the enmity they are fostering between their hitherto friendly communities. In strange circumstances he meets with the daughter of Lord Sigmarho, Epsifa, who is also seeking the truth.
These two stories reflect each other, as unease turns to conflict and bloodshed and although matters are resolved in time, nothing will be quite the same again in Alphabetania or Louis and Derryk’s lives. Set against the background of the Second World War with its death and destruction, this is a powerful allegory of the story of humanity.
