Posted: Thursday, March 21st
Phil Visher: “Hey there this is Phil Visher, back again with my old friend Buck Denver.”
Buck Denver: “After slogging through the entire Old Testament, it’s time for the Good News.”
Phil Visher: “This is a very important story.”
Chuck Waggin: “That’s why you need Country Music.”
“And Popsicle Sticks.”
Captain Pete: “Nautical references.”
Sunday School Lady: “My turn.”
Phil Visher: “Your turn.”
Sunday School Lady: “Mark wasn’t one of Jesus’ disciples, he was a good friend of the disciple Peter though. And we believe the Gospel of Mark is his record of all the stories Peter told him about Jesus.”
Phil Visher: “Do you know what a genealogy is?”
Buck Denver: “What’s the first book of the New Testament.”
Ian: “What about the Kingdom of God? What is that?”
Phil Visher: “Ah, interesting question. Jesus’ teaching in Galilee and people are amazed at what they hear. One day Jesus’ turns to his disciples and says “who do you think I am?” And Peter steps forward and answers you are the messiah.”
Chunk Waggin: “He figured it out.”
Phil Visher: “God saw his Son stained with the sin of the world.”
Chuck Waggin: “So Jesus took the punishment for my sin.”
Phil Vischer: “The huge stone that blocked the entrance had been rolled away and Jesus wasn’t there.”
Sunday School Lady: “The Good News. The Good News. Blessed are the shoes that are bringing Good News.”
Buck Denver: “Don’t miss DVD 10 coming soon.”

Phil Vischer is the creator of ‘What's In The Bible?’ But what you might not know is he used to be the voice of everybody’s favourite vegetable, Bob the Tomato, up until nine years ago when Phil hit rock bottom.
After an $11 million lawsuit and a demoralising bankruptcy, Veggietales was sold to highest bidder. Here’s Phil's incredible story, the squashed tomato that restored his dream.
THE RISE OF VEGGIETALES:
Phil Visher sat at his computer screen, a newly married man with $10 in his pocket, staring at a tomato and a cucumber. It was in that computer chair where he decided to commit his life to multimedia children's ministry by communicating the gospel through talking vegetables.
His first video was released in 1993 called God is Bigger than the Boggie Man. The video spread like an epidemic. Between 1996 and 1999 Big Idea’s (Phil’s animation company) revenue grew by 3300% - from $1.3 million to $44 million! By the early 2000’s, Veggietales sold over 50 million videos and Big Idea’s became one of the largest production companies in America.
Bob the Tomato had become an international super star.
THE FALL OF VEGGIETALES:
In 2003 Lyrick Studio's filed a lawsuit accusing Big Idea for violating a verbal contract. The Lyrick lawyers argued an ethically sketchy case and won. The court in Dallas, Texas awarded $11 million in damages.
Phil had to watch in despair as every character he had created, every song he had wrote, and every story he had told was packed up in a box and sold to the highest bidder. The lawsuit was over-turned a year later, but the damage had already been done.
“It was like I had fallen down the stair and God just watched, and didn't lift a finger” - taken from a interview with Phil Vischer on 100 Huntley Street.
But the rock bottom experience was exactly what Phil needed. He released he had made the work he was doing more important than his relationship with God. His realisation is something we can all learn from: how are people going to learn about God? Through watching sensational Christian media, or watching everyday Christians?
After the bankruptcy, Phil Vischer sat down and wrote his story down so others could learn from his mistakes in a book called Me, Myself and Bob.
FROM THE ASHES ROSE WHAT’S IN THE BIBLE:
Veggietales had storytelling down to a fine art. Bob the Tomato and his vegetable friends could teach, sing, and dance through the story of Samson whilst teaching simple values. What about the meat and potatoes of faith, like the over-arching story of salvation, or difficult concepts like sin?
Phil's aim was to do what ‘Sesame Street’ did for literacy. Kids in America get a massive head start on their ABC's thanks to Big Bird, Elmo, and the Cookie Monster. What's In The Bible? will get kids a massive head start on their Bible knowledge thanks to Buck Denver, Clive & Ian and many more lovable puppet characters.
So has Phil learnt from his mistakes? Only time will tell, but for now the ex-tomato is staying true his calling and true to his God.
