Full Product Description
On your feet, then, if you want to join the hard rock men.
He screwed his eyes shut, then forced them open. In the half-light, his older brother Jem was grinning down at him.
Collan stared up at him. Then he was out of bed with one bound as the truth struck home.
It was his 12th birthday. He was going underground as a miner.
Hard Rock is a brilliant historical adventure story for children ages 8 to 11. Collan starts work down the mines, but his excitement turns to terror as a disaster on his first day shows how dangerous life is underground. Will he stay safe? And what will happen when John Wesley visits the town?
Through this book, children, teachers, childrens workers and parents can explore Wesleys life, his teaching and his chosen Lifepath. They can also discover, through the fiction story, the impact of Wesleys teaching and the difference between him and the traditional church.
Fay Sampson is an accomplished writer for children and teenagers, including some science fiction/fantasy titles for Lion Publishing.

Hard RockMary Bartholomew, via The Good Book Stall
Collan is a twelve year old lad in Cornwall at the height of the tin and copper mining industry there. He has been working some years at the mine, leading a horse round and round, hauling buckets of water from the mine to prevent flooding. Now at last, he is old enough to go underground and become a real miner, a ‘hard rock’ man as they are called. From the moment he steps on the first rung of the ladder leading down into the depths, you can feel his fear, and things don’t improve as he follows his father and brother to the rock face. But even though what happens in the mine is exciting enough, it is hearing John Wesley preach at Gwennap Pit that makes the greatest impact on his life. An adventure story for 8 – 11year olds that kept this ‘slightly older’ reviewer reading to the end.
