Virtually ChristianJohn Irvine, via The Good Book Stall
This new book by a prolific Christian writer puts forward for our consideration a different understanding of Christianity. It is non-traditional and challenging, arguing that the meaning of Christ has been misunderstood and distorted for centuries by the traditional churches, both Catholic and Protestant. It includes a wide-ranging look at Jesus’ life and teaching through history, literature and philosophy and brings it right up-to-date, demonstrating how the figure of Jesus impacts on our contemporary world. He argues that in many so-called Christian cultures God stands for punishment and violence whereas Jesus is the epitome of non-violence, forgiveness and compassion. The author says “writing this book has been a beautiful experience”. Much of that experience is communicated to us. Many readers will find his arguments hard to accept but others will see them as a new and refreshing look at the Christianity we take for granted.
