The World is My CloisterAlexandra Irvine, via The Good Book Stall
A quotation from St Francis of Assisi as the title is a good way to start a book about the cultivation of spirituality. The author suggests that, no matter what our station in life might be, we should try to find some time and some place for silence, solitude and prayer. In this way we may emulate the practices of saints and hermits without actually leaving our world and retiring into a monastery, still less a desert. While gently encouraging us in this endeavour, he gives some practical advice on the subject of meditation. Although much of this counsel is for our personal benefit, the writer’s intention is more than that. A cloister where a cell exists and where a hermit prays becomes in itself a holy place. To practise the inner life of a hermit with our bodies as our cell and the environment as our cloister must end in making the world a better place for everyone.
