The Highway Code for RetirementMary Bartholomew, via The Good Book Stall
David Winter says that he is qualified to write on retirement as he has done it three times. Well I think I am qualified to review his book as I have given up paid work twice. Once to raise a family and once to retire at 62 from my new profession (Christian bookselling) that I started when the family had left home and now at 76 I am planning to retire again next year, or at least give up the responsibility of being editor of The Good Bookstall. (any offers to take over – its very enjoyable?)
Apart from disagreeing with David’s opening sentence, when to my mind he wrongly interprets Malcolm Muggeridge’s statement as referring to retirement rather than when to retire, I agree with everything he says!
He addresses many aspects of retirement, many options and attitudes that require consideration and puts forward practical suggestions one at least of which should find a response from readers looking for help.
In his list of ‘Things you might try’ he doesn’t mention Church bell ringing. This is a skill that can be learnt at any age. It takes longer to be proficient when you are older, but you don’t have to become expert to be very useful on a Sunday and you meet people of every age and of every walk of life. Ringers are always in short supply these days, Why not give it a try?
To get the full advantage of David’s wisdom, this book needs reading before you get to retirement age, and with today’s uncertain economic climate retirement can come earlier than you expect as well as the later date proposed by the government.
