The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God
Full Product Description
But is it really that easy? What does the Bible teach about Gods love? What does it have to say about the wrath of the loving God, or about the loving God who is also sovereign Lord?
In this book, Don Carson turns his attention to these vital questions. He wants us to get a new perspective - one that sees God as awesome and glorious as well as loving. He wants us to take seriously the need for justice to be done and for God to be Lord. But most of all, he wants us to understand that these things are included in God's love, not opposed to it, and so to reach an even greater, richer, more 'truth-full' picture of the wonderful love of God.
The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God by D. A. Carson was published by Inter-Varsity Press in March 2010 and is our 23036th best seller. The ISBN for The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God is 9781844744275.

The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of GodChris Moore, via The Good Book Stall
Originally published in 2000, this book is collection of four lectures given in 1998. It’s a short read - just 96 pages - and it is clearly written with an easy style, although as these lectures were delivered at a seminary some theological understanding is assumed.
At first glance, the title seems odd. After all, the love of God is something which is proclaimed Sunday by Sunday throughout the world. ‘God is love’, says John, and the church wholeheartedly agrees. However, Carson asks, what is ‘love’ and have we overlaid the word with modern sentimentalism? Is our understanding of God’s love more dependent on romance than what is described in the Bible?
In discussing the theme, Carson considers issues of translation and sees the perfect expression of God’s love as being within the Trinity. He also tackles the question of emotions and God? - is God changeable - and also the theme of wrath which is present throughout the Bible.
This book has proved popular over the past decade, as this recent reprint shows. It is a challenging read and enjoyable for that. Within the English word ‘love’ there is a vast range of meanings. Carson provides some focus.
