Spring Harvest Newsongs For The Church 2016Never For Nothing
Here’s a selection of 12 songs of worship and proclamation to inspire faith and stir hearts into action. Written by a variety of leading songwriters, I enthusiastically listened to see which songs I might use myself in the future to lead worship. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait long. Both of the opening numbers are very strong. “Every Giant Will Fall” has a superb chorus that tells that nothing is impossible with Jesus. I very much liked the fiddle sound on David Lyon’s “I Will Hope.” It’s a bouncy song that has just a hint of Celtic traits about it. “In God We Trust” sounded so typically Hillsongs that I had a quick look at the writing credits. It was no surprise, then, to find that Reuben Morgan was one of the co-writers. I recently wrote highly of Christine DiMarco’s latest album and from it comes “Eyes on You.” It’s a terrific song and one that I highlighted as being perfect for church use at the time. That track starts a real purple patch for the album. Next up, the pure acoustic sound of “Alleluia He Has Loved Us” hit just the right note with me. This is followed by Simon Brading’s “Alive With Worship.” I’ve got to say that this song had me singing along straight away. The chorus, especially is so catchy. Vocals of the album have to come from the uncredited female on “Never Gonna Stop Singing.” What a great sentiment! Her voice drives the song along and is accompanied by some well played banjo sounds. Social media was recently complaining that there weren’t enough new, powerful songs for the church. Well, I’d like to point those people who made those comments to this release. Twelve new songs and some very good ones, at that! 9/10
Spring Harvest Newsongs For The Church 2016Cross Rhythms
In case you're not a Spring Harvest regular, I would explain that before the events in Skegness and Minehead take place, each year Spring Harvest's record company, Elevation, put out an album of studio recordings of songs which will be sung in the big top celebrations. This is the latest in their New Songs series. This particular album was produced and mixed by Paul Burton with a bevy of session singers including Sarah Bird, Dave Griffiths, Doug Walker, Yvonne Lyon and others. I have to say that this album has replaced my all-time favourite from 2006 ('Our God Reigns') in my car's CD collection! The first three tracks are excellent - they have been part of my summer soundtrack. "Every Giant Will Fall" features powerful lyrics: "Though the shadows steal the light/Your love is my battle cry/The anthem for all my life." Great words from Rend Collective. Equally impactful is David Lyons' upbeat "I Will Hope" on which he features playing accordion. "God Of Miracles" (co-written by Chris McClarney) proclaims, "This world is shaking/But you cannot be shaken" while Sarah Bird, currently my favourite contemporary Christian female vocalist, delivers a great version of Kristene DiMarco's track "Eyes On You" ("Through the laughter, through the pain/My only answer, my only truth/Eyes on you, Lord, eyes on You"). Several quality tracks follow. Some, like "Abide With Me" and "How Sweet The Sound", have familiar titles but are indeed new songs. Thank you Spring Harvest for a relevant, powerful contribution to contemporary worship and my personal spiritual edification. 9/10
