If you are unfamiliar with the details of the American civil war between the slave owning south and the north of the country, the traumas that arose out of the conflict are shown here in all their stark reality.
Jesselynn’s family have always treated their slaves well, but nevertheless they were still slaves. Now they have been freed by Jesselynn’s father before his death, and along with some of them and others that have joined them along the way, the group having reached Missouri and found it nearly destroyed by the warfare, has no option than to press on along the Oregon Trail to look for a new life.
That takes a few words to write but in no way does it describe all that is in this book. There is Aunt Agatha, endeavouring to exist on her own in her friend’s ramshackle home, what happens to her? Jesselynn’s sister Louise pretending to be married to her brother, Zachary, to enable her to nurse wounded soldiers in her Aunt Sophia’s home, and her quest for morphine to ease the soldiers pain: and who is Wolf? I did not expect to get so involved with this story as I did. I now long to read the prequel and the sequel, both also being re-issued.
