Shaped By The CrossMelanie Carroll, via The Good Book Stall
This short book of just over 100 pages is a beautiful, quiet and considered meditation that revolves around a series of photographs taken in 1964 of Michelangelo’s Pieta. Each chapter opens with a quote and full page photograph and then a contemplation that in some way reflects the photograph and what it and Michelangelo’s statue help inform us of the nature of Jesus’ suffering. Not only Jesus’s suffering though but also the nature of human suffering, the way we deal with it, what could have caused it and what could be the resolution of it. They are thoughtful, gentle and yet challenging reflections that manage to convey in words some of what the pieta conveys in its beautiful visual tableau of suffering and grief. Each chapter then ends with a prayer and moves on to a reflection and conversation section that utilizes quotes from the prior chapter in each question.
This book is certainly suitable for any private or group study in which the Cross and Suffering is to be studied and indeed it is a perfect Lent accompaniment although that is not its sole use. It is a beautiful series of meditations and well worth consideration.
