Sackcloth and Ashes

Full Product Description

Originally known as an outspoken Conservative MP, Ann Widdecombe served as Minister of State at the Home Office under Michael Howard, whom she famously described as having 'something of the dark about him'. She has never shrunk from controversy: she has consistently spoken out in favour of the death penalty, and she very publicly left the Church of England to become a Roman Catholic when the Anglican Church voted to ordain women priests. Her many TV appearances include Celebrity Fit Club and Have I Got News For You as well as, most famously, Strictly Come Dancing (she also played herself in an episode of Dr Who). Since her success on Strictly, she has done a regular season in pantomime with Craig Revel Horwood (and she is reprising her Strictly guise for this year's Children in Need appeal). A former agony aunt; she is a columnist and best-selling novelist, and has recently written an autobiography, which she herself has described as "rude about all and sundry".
As the author of the first Bloomsbury Lent Book, she has chosen to tackle Penance and Penitence on which subjects she has characteristically robust views as well as being very well informed (as Minister for Prisons, she visited every prison in Britain). Looking at voluntary penance and its relation to repentance, and at the role of penance as enforced by the State, she explores whether Lenten penance is a bore from which we are released on Easter Sunday, or whether it can be a source of deep spiritual contentment.

Sackcloth and Ashes by Ann Widdecombe was published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC in November 2013 and is our 44969th best seller. The ISBN for Sackcloth and Ashes is 9781408187166.
