Reconciling One and AllBarry Vendy, via The Good Book Stall
‘The search for reconciliation is at the heart of faith and fundamental to humanity’, writes Castle. This book is a helpful consideration of what it is (indefinable, but summed up as ‘the desire to repair fractured relationships’) and the complex and costly process by which it comes about. Castle draws appropriate illustrations from Northern Ireland and South Africa and from agencies in Israel and Palestine. But he doesn’t only deal with global issues. Reconciliation is also required between and within persons and families, and between God and humanity.
Among the highlights for this reviewer were a chapter on victimhood (a probing look at a widespread experience); another on forgiveness; and a powerful section on conduct that ‘dehumanises’ others (p.84f). But there is a lot more to value. Individuals and groups could profitably study this book. Are our churches ‘communities of reconciliation?’
