Praying with Christian MysticsMelanie Carroll, via The Good Book Stall
Praying with Christian Mystics is a lovely little book which acts not only as an introduction to the act of praying in a devotional style using the works of the mystics as a springboard for reflection and contemplation, but also an excellent introduction to the four mystics covered in the book - Julian of Norwich, St Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross and Meister Eckhart. Maguire gives a good basic introduction to each of them that covers their history, time and setting, as well as their mysticism and outlook before then going onto the actual exercises of prayer and reflection, which use good solid chunks of their works. Each mystic is taken separately and it would be very easy to use this book as the basis of a four week group study or prayer course.
I was taken with the introduction to the book, particularly the reference to Karl Rahner's thoughts on how each of us is or should be a mystic and how this has conditioned her own thinking. It is lovely that she points out that many have mystical experiences and the only difference is that with these well known mystics wrote down their experiences so that we could know of them.
This is an excellent book indeed, one for all and not just the budding mystics amongst us.
