The PennyMary Bartholomew, via The Good Book Stall
For her first novel, Joyce Meyer, the well known Christian writer, has chosen a difficult subject based on her own childhood but has treated it in a sympathetic and very readable way: I read this book non-stop one evening. On a very hot afternoon in St Louis, USA, Jenny prizes up a penny, melting into the tarmac. This triggers off a chain reaction that results in her being offered a part-time job. Jenny is still at school, her older sister is going off to Secretarial college and she will be left at home with her abusive father, and her mother who seems too timid to stand up for her children. From this scenario, the authors unravel an enchanting story that held my attention from start to finish.
