Parables of JesusBob Page, via The Good Book Stall
John McLaughlin has produced an exceptionally readable work on the parables of Jesus. He uses language that clarifies and edifies. It might even be argued that the simplicity of his expression will deter the more academically minded of his potential readership from reading beyond the early pages. This would be a pity as McLaughlin's understanding of the parables and the background against which they are set is clearly profound. His interpretation of the parables of the prodigal son and the unmerciful slave are very much cases in point.
There are many tid-bits of information that McLaughlin throws in for good measure: a more accurate evaluation of the worth of a talent than is normally given; the significance of the number seven in biblical tradition and, perhaps most interestingly of all, the sympathetic light he casts on the much maligned Pharisees.
All-in-all the Parables of Jesus is well worth the investment of the time it takes to read it.
