The Marriage of JesusIan Gibson, via The Good Book Stall
This book could be a difficult one for many to read, especially of a fundamental faith and belief and from whatever wing of Christianity. The book is a thoroughly thought-provoking and fascinating book which blends a seamless and impressive mix of scholarship, practicality and mysticism. The whole basis of the book is to discuss and expound the theory that Jesus did marry; the question of whether it was Mary Magdalene, as some modern novels would have it, or someone else, completely unknown to us and the ancient writers. The theory starts with the comment that Jesus, when fourteen did marry, as many did in the ancient world, and of course, before we begin to hear about his earthly ministry in earnest in the biblical writings. It was because, the author proposes, and that we never hear of those “missing years” as he was bringing up a family as husband and father. The arguments flow to and fro and the opinions of scholars from all ranks and traditions are listed, sometimes discounted, sometimes acknowledged. This book is worth reading for its own sake and also to underpin some beliefs we may have.
