Life In ChristNick Horton, via The Good Book Stall
When I retired, my colleagues gave me one of Mary Fleeson’s works. I was delighted to be asked to review this book of hers. In it twelve “Calls” are explored in word and art intertwined – rather in the same way as appears in Celtic Gospels. The calls include those to Beginning, to Prepare, to be like Jesus and to Creativity. In each chapter Mary provides a meditation, notes on the design, an activity and a prayer. Many of the images with which the words are surrounded come from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, its scenery and wildlife.
This is a book of beauty, of the interweaving of word and image: for example in the chapter entitled A Call to Stillness, Mary is shown sitting at the feet of Jesus with a perfect plain white window in the centre as Martha rushes around busy with chores as a border to the central image.
I imagine that this is a book which will draw me back again and again – as do the Holy Islands of Lindisfarne and Iona. It is a book to treasure.
