Lapsed AgnosticDeborah Reynolds, via The Good Book Stall
This is the autobiography of a man bought up in as a Catholic in Ireland who lost his faith and, in so doing, became an alcoholic. As he recovered, he began to rediscover Christianity and his faith became much more real and alive to him than it had been in the past. I found parts of the autobiography fascinating but other sections less so. John Waters is particularly interesting when he describes his childhood picture of an authoritarian judging God and, as he grows into adulthood, how the tensions and illogicality of that concept lead him to adopt a more hedonistic approach to life and to become increasingly dependent on alcohol. He writes very informatively about the AA Recovery programme which he embarked upon and how that enabled him to make links with the Christian faith and to come back to believing in a more realistic view of God. His individual journey and exploration of faith is well-described. However, he has several chapters about the workings of Irish Society and although some of his insights can be applied to the UK these sections are probably of more limited interest. This book would be of interest to anyone who is struggling to make sense of God, has doubts about God, questioning God amidst the paradoxes of living in a secular world.
