Jesus The TemplePaul Scott, via The Good Book Stall
In this well researched book, Nicholas Perrin explores the Jesus who may have offered in himself a new reality of ‘temple’ to replace the profaned and corrupted institution which existed in Jesus’ day. Jesus may be seen therefore as a natural extension of a movement that had given rise to the Psalms of Solomon, the Qumran writings, and possibly even to the preaching of John the Baptizer. Central to Perrin’s thesis is Jesus’ so-called cleansing of the Temple, simultaneously presented as an eschatological event heralding God’s sovereign reign, and a non-eschatological event calling for repentance and renewal within the present. Within this discussion, Perrin sees of particular importance the preaching of the Kingdom to the poor, the socio-economic nature of Jesus’ call.
This is a thought provoking book. It is accessible and well organised, with very useful summary sections. There are moments when it possibly over interprets the evidence, but it provides a useful foil to more outlandish attempts at the recreation of a historical Jesus.
