InsurrectionPaul Scott, via The Good Book Stall
There are no two ways about it, Peter Rollins’ book is profoundly unsettling. From the outset we are brought face to face with crucifixion. Here all those certainties that religion offers us, in tradition, in doctrine, in theology, in liturgy, Rollins’ own dei ex machine, he systematically hangs out to dry, wrings out in the shock waves emanating perpetually from Jesus’ horrifying cry from the cross ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’
Rollins explores the terrifying potential of that cry to accompany us to our own particular shattered edge. However, rather than pulling us back, it allows us to plunge over into the abyss. That crucifixion is the essence of his Part One. Part Two seeks to identify for us the characteristics of survival, his Insurrection. It is though not a comfortably nurtured salvation, but one that breaks ourselves open to reveal God’s own self. Rollins maintains that it is only there where we find our true God, all the rest is delusion. Therefore can I recommend the book? Yes, but not because I have embraced its message, but rather because I recognise the weight of its crucifixion, and I have to believe, from that crucifixion, God as its only possible deliverer.
