I Hear A Seed GrowingRuthie Thomas, via The Good Book Stall
In diary form Edwina Gateley a British Catholic lay-missionary, shares an intimate journey from seeking God in an old trailer in a forest, to her street level work with prostitutes in Chicago.
The book also bears record from Dolores, a street worker and alcoholic befriended by Edwina and encouraged to keep a diary. At first her entries are full of hope; love for Edwina and child like faith in her discovery of a personal God. But as time passes it becomes more difficult for her to make and stick to the best choices. Edwina’s love and care for her shine through from the writings during Dolores’ outward disintegration.
Arguably the most poignant part of the book is from a letter addressed to Edwina from a street worker; ‘When you go out to give talks, carry our message to the people you speak to, tell them that we are all God’s children and that nobody was born into this world trying to be negative. Tell them we all came with great expectations that our lives would be happy and fruitful. So if they can’t help us to recover, and find happiness in life, ask them not to hurt us.’
