Faith On Trial: Psalm 73John Macaulay, via The Good Book Stall
This book is a reprint of the original 1965 edition, and includes a helpful introduction by Kevin De Young. It is based on a series of sermons preached by Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Psalm 73, and is divided into eleven chapters.
Lloyd-Jones takes the reader through the process of developing a deeper faith in the goodness of God, by using the Psalmist’s experience. The author deals with the belief that if we belong to God we should be protected from the problems of life, ‘That was the thing that perplexed this Psalmist as he contrasted his own lot with that of the wicked.’ (Page 21)
We accompany the Psalmist on the journey from being disgruntled with God’s apparent indifference to his pain, to recognition of God’s grace at work in his life. This is not a simplistic book but one that is well thought out and reflects much that is true in our human experience of faith.
As a devotional aid it is excellent and really helpful, but it is also useful to anyone involved in pastoral ministry because of the deep and rich insights offered by the author. As an example of expository preaching it ranks amongst the best of Lloyd-Jones work and is well worth buying on that basis alone.
