The Faith Of Barrack Obama
Full Product Description
You'd have to live in a cave to have avoided hearing about Barack Obama's woes relating to his close relationship with the senior pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright. People question Senator Obama's ability to represent persons of all races when he attended for so long a church defined by anger toward white America.
Fortunately, there is more to the senator's faith than this one issue. As early as 2004, he delivered a powerful speech to the Democratic National Convention, taking a stand for his faith: "We worship an awesome God in the Blue States." In The Faith of Barack Obama, Stephen Mansfield explores Obama's religious faith without political or ideological bias. His basic premise is this: If a man's faith is sincere, then it is the most important thing about him. It is impossible for us to understand how Barack Obama will lead without first understanding the religious vision that informs his life.
"You must read this perceptive and well written book. Then you will know why Barack Obama has such a passion for justice and equity, such a gift for filling people of different generations with a newfound hope that things can and will change for the better. His inspiration comes from his faith; he is an ardent believer. Yes, he is a Christian and proud of it."

The Faith of Barack ObamaHelen Hancox, via The Good Book Stall
This is a short book at about 140 pages (although with 45 pages of appendices including texts of speeches). It provides an excellent introduction to Barack Obama and the place that his Christian faith holds in his life. It briefly describes his upbringing by an atheist mother and Muslim father, his conversion to Christianity and his relationship with his mentor, Jeremiah Wright. The book doesn't delve deeply into Obama's political history but discusses a few of his political views and how they fit with his faith. There is a particularly helpful chapter which looks at Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain and George W Bush and the way in which the faith of each of them works out in their lives.
The book was an easy read with some interesting anecdotes and no strong political axe to grind although I didn't feel that I got a very in-depth look at the character of Obama, he still felt somewhat distant. The book accurately portrayed the rising importance of Christian faith in American politics and showed the different ways in which the faith of the candidates can be demonstrated. It is a helpful resource for those interested in American politics and in the man who is now the new President.
