Eden Article: John Pipers Dream Cone True!
John Piper, the man who argues the Reason for God, has seen has biblical dreams come true in the birth of the English Standard Version.
“The ESV is a dream come true for me. The rightful heir to a great line of historic translations, it provides the continuity and modern accuracy I longed for.”
So why? Why is the ESV John Piper’s scriptural choice?
1. IT’S GOT ALL THE WORDS IN IT
Captured on a YouTube video, John Piper stresses and sweats over one word – ‘for’. Most modern translations omit words for different reasons, mostly because they don’t actually know what they mean. But John thinks these unknown words shouldn’t be cut out, but allowed to stay and challenge readers. Without them the verse could change completely.
“They’re troubled; they don’t know what to do with the word – for. Neither do I, but I want to work on it. If you want to get something where all the words are there, then get the ESV or the NRSV or the KJV. I’m not trying to sell anything; I just want all the words.” – John Piper, desiringgod.com.
2. BALANCES ACCURACY AND READABILTY
If Bible translation was a see-saw, one side of the plank would read ‘accurate translation’ and the other ‘readable translation’.
The ESV is a literal translation that strives for continuity. It translates every word of the original Greek and Hebrew respecting their authority whilst recognising our modern reading habits. It’s not a paraphrase, which sits on readability. Nor a word-for-word copy, which sits on accuracy. It’s both faithful to the scripture and faithful to the reader.
As the pastor of Bethlahem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, John Piper has a responsibility to shepherd his congregation, teaching and advising through their spiritual journey.
“I can make use of it in all the churches needs. From the children, through the youth, through Bible memory, through public reading, through meditation, through memorisation I love it.” – John Piper, evsstudybible.com.
In John’s expert opinion, the ESV is the only Bible you need.
4. CONVERTED TO ESV-ANITY
John’s become a spokesman for EVS, advocating its use in every aspect of the church’s life. He even did the KeyNote Address at the Crossway Banquet (Crossway are the publishers and driving force behind ESV).
This particular edition, the ESV Daily Reading Bible, is structured in 365 daily readings for a breath-taking Bible experience. A firmly devotional Bible, this version will encourage you to pick up a Bible on a daily basis and engage with God’s Word.
