The author takes us gently by the hand and leads us into an exploration of the nature of the Godhead. He writes in a conversational style explaining deep truths in an understandable way. The book is packed with helpful illustrations and interesting quotes from the great Christian theologians.
Many subjects are covered including the nature of God, the problem of evil and the Trinity. His answers are usually sure footed and in line with mainstream Christian teaching.
There were a couple of times when Mr McGrath's clear thinking lets him down. He seems to accept that we can address God as "she" ignoring the Biblical evidence. He also accepts the Big Bang theory without question and fails to answer the question of why and when death came into the world. Aside from these quibbles this is an excellent book that is well worth reading.
“THANK you, Lord, for Alister McGrath” has been the heartfelt prayer of many theological students at different levels over the past three decades . . . They have adored McGrath’s astonishing gifts for clarity, logical argument, and apt illustration. Again and again, he elegantly performs that central task of any teacher: to enable his students and readers, starting from the familiar ground of what they already know, to go on to explore new territory, and begin to see an expanded horizon." - Church Times.
