The Book of MaryJ.Nicholas Latham, via The Good Book Stall
'I've been trying out different Marian voices, guises, images and narratives as a way of exploring and pursuing my own questions and preoccupations...' (p. 115). Nicola Slee reflects on both the well-known roles and person of Mary, and introduces us to many others. The Mother of God cannot be limited in her meanings - and, rightly, is certainly not a 'patriarchal puppet' (p.5). She admits that some of her poems 'certainly intend to push at the boundaries...opening a road to fresh ways of looking, feeling and thinking.' (p. viii). But they do so with affection, honesty and respect. It is a pity that Ms Slee, her editors and advisors, have fallen into a common Protestant mistake of ascribing a 'Virgin Conception' to Mary, when they mean her Immaculate Conception; also, 'the dogma of...the Assumption' was defined in 1950 (ascribed correctly on p. 136) not 'in the late nineteenth century' (p. 7). Mary for all Christians by the late Professor John Macquarie and the 'Agreed Statement' of the Anglican and Roman Catholic International Commission, Mary. Grace and Hope in Christ will add to her knowledge, and, hopefully, enthuse her to write more of her poems and reflections.
