Be Reverent: Bowing Before Our Awesome GodAlan Hill, via The Good Book Stall
This is an updated version of a book first published in 1996. It is part of the well known “Be” series of Bible commentaries written by the American Warren Wiersbe.
Exekiel is a difficult book to read and interpret and is therefore often neglected (when did you last hear a sermon on Ezekiel?). Mr. Wiersbe however shows that the book is very relevant for our age because it emphasises a reverence for the name and glory of God. This is something he sees as sadly lacking in the church today. How true!
Taking three or more chapters at a time, the author explores the major themes and identifies key lessons for us. He writes in an interesting and engaging style, with thoughtful and helpful application.
For me the only disappointing part of this book are his comments on chapters 38 to 48 which cover Gog and the description of a new temple. Although Mr. Wiersbe admits that Christians have struggled to interpret these prophecies, he proceeds to confidently explain them based on pre-millennial teaching. This turns these chapters into little more than a future history lesson with little relevance to the church today. He also fails to tackle the weaknesses of such an interpretation (e.g. how can he justify believing that the sacrificial system will be re-introduced in the light of the teaching of Hebrews ?). This is a shame because it mars an otherwise excellent book.
