A Hope UndauntedShelley Moseley, The Booklist
It?s the summer of 1929, and Katie O?Connor knows exactly what she wants: marriage to rich, rakish, albeit spoiled Jack Worthington, and a law career. When Jack and others in her circle of self-centered, privileged friends deliberately humiliate a soda jerk, Katie is embarrassed. Then she breaks curfew too many times, and her father sentences her to work as a summer volunteer at the Boston Children?s Aid Society. Raised on the wrong side of the tracks, Luke McGee has worked his way through law school, and even though he?s now an attorney, he fills in at the soda counter for a friend, only to become the brunt of Jack and the gang?s cruelty. When Luke becomes assistant director of the Boston Children?s Aid Society, his life becomes intertwined with Katie?s, perhaps forever. A rich girl and a poor boy find that love can be the great equalizer in Lessman?s engrossing tale, which has more awareness and sizzle between the hero and heroine than your average inspirational romance. This is the first book in the Winds of Change series.
A Hope UndauntedZoë Stevenson, via The Good Book Stall
This novel is a whopping 505 pages and I loved every page. This historical work of fiction the first in the Winds of Change series, is set in the age of the Charleston in Boston and women are just beginning to fight for their rights and 18 year old headstrong Katie O’Connor has her whole life planned, that is until her wayward behaviour forces her father to take radical action to tame his daughter before its too late.
With her whole summer banned from going out she is forced to volunteer at a local adoption agency where her boss Luke McGee is the boy from her childhood that she loved to hate, that is until he becomes the man she hates to love.
Essentially this is a love story about Katie and Luke, but I really like the way that Lessman opens the story out to the whole O’Conner family and you are able to follow a mini story about each of her 3 sisters and 2 brothers and her parents.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could barely put it down, not the best book to read in bed before you go to sleep and have to get up for work at 5am, I had to force myself to put it down so I could get some sleep. I can’t wait to read more of Lessman’s novels especially if they are as good as this one.
