Todd and Sonja Burpo's almost-four-year-old son Colton made an unforgettable trip to heaven and back during the darkest, most stressed-out days of their lives.
Times were tough, money was scarce, and the bills, frustrations, and fears were piled high.
How did Colton's visit to heaven change things for them individually and as a family? And what does any of this mean for you and your life?
Todd, and for the first time ever Sonja and Colton, from their perspectives, share what has happened since the release of their New York Times bestseller, Heaven Is for Real. Through their own experiences, and after hearing from thousands of the more than eight million readers who have shared how the story has affected them, they show you how believing heaven is for real will help you survive hardships here on earth, including the death of a loved one or the loss of a child through tragedy, miscarriage, or even abortion.
Todd, Sonja, and Colton answer questions such as:
They also explain how their story can help you keep thoughts of eternity in mind in the midst of your own overly busy, stressed-out lives.
Heaven truly is for real, and believing it changes everything!
This devotional based on the bestselling book 'Heaven Is For Real' has been written by Colton Burpo's mother Sonja and his father Todd.
Each short piece includes an extract from the book alongside a study that pulls out what we can learn from the text, with Bible references. Heaven Is For Real Ministries say that they intend to point people towards Scripture, and this book does just that.

About the Authors
Narrator: ‘What began as one family’s worst nightmare is now the story that has touched millions worldwide. In this new inspirational reader, Todd and Sonja Burpo share their family’s responses to the ‘Heaven Is For Real’ experience - they answer questions about what it’s like to struggle with God, to doubt, and what He might be doing with those little interruptions in our lives. They also offer insights gained from encounters with readers, whose own stories have reinforced the importance of living every day with the hope of Heaven.
‘Heaven Changes Everything’ will encourage readers to keep thoughts of eternity in mind, in the midst of their busy, stressed-out lives - because Heaven truly IS for real, and it changes everything.’
‘A devotional that urges readers to be ‘living with eternity in mind’ the family that brought us ‘Heaven Is For Real’ now extends the application of Colton Burpo’s testimony of heaven to our daily lives. Todd and Sonja Burpo talk of how their perspective and circumstances have been changed by Colton’s heavenly experience - reminded of God’s ultimate knowledge, presence and control, they now go about their lives with assurance and confidence that the Kingdom of God is near.’
‘I would recommend it. Very simplistic, yet very personal and in a great story form - it hits you easily where you are.’ - Readers Review
‘Heaven Is For Real’ is a New York Times no.1 bestseller - it has taken America, and the rest of the world by storm. Having sold more than half a million copies, the book has now been translated into over 30 different languages. The Burpo family continue to live in Imperial, Nebraska but are also completing a world tour in order to share their story.
By no means the first book that has told of a heavenly experience - or indeed a hellish one - ‘Heaven Is For Real’ has had wide appeal. Readers trust Jesus’ emphasis on listening to children (an endorsement of Psalm 8.2) and they presume that Colton Burpo has given his family an accurate and truthful account of what he saw.
Revelations within the book have astounded readers in the same way that they astounded Colton’s family - these include his account of meeting his miscarried sister and his great-grandfather (who died thirty years earlier).
The impact of ‘Heaven Is For Real’ has been widespread, with people across the world beginning to consider the real possibility of ‘heaven’ as a physical place - vastly different to the hazy place among the clouds that many of us would imagine.
As one could expect, ‘Heaven Is For Real’ has received a wide spectrum of response, from praise to condemnation. I think it’s crucial that the validity of Colton’s story is addressed, because the impact of the book is completely lost on a reader who doubts the truth of the story. I’m not going to draw your conclusions for you: here’s a small case for each side.
‘Heaven Is For Real’ was reluctantly written by a pastor who slowly gained details about his son’s experience through listening, rather than asking leading questions. Todd Burpo initially doubted his son’s story before being convinced by the conveyance of unknowable details. Also, Todd believes that Colton’s story is compatible with Scripture.
Colton’s descriptions often seem quite advanced in their vocabulary, suggesting that words have been put in his mouth. Fear is prevalent in the experience - while Colton describes being frightened while ‘sitting in Jesus’ lap’ and also when he wakes up he screams for his Dad. Some descriptions seem extra-scriptural e.g. that humans are given wings; other descriptions seem to contradict Scripture e.g the Holy Spirit as a blue being who ‘shoots down power’ and Colton’s perception of the ages of his dead relatives. As for the ‘unknowable details’ - some critics suggest that these could easily have been conveyed demonic influence.
I suggest that you read ‘Heaven Is For Real’ before you read ‘Heaven Changes Everything’ - pray for discernment over its validity/falsehood. It is to be expected that a book this popular has provoked different responses. If you are encouraged by Colton’s story, then ‘Heaven Changes Everything’ would make a great devotional for you to study.
