Publisher's Description

A South African native and acclaimed worship leader, Brenton Brown's journey changed when he moved to England and joined Oxford Vineyard. Though still young, Brenton wrote some of the Church's best-loved songs: Your Love Is Amazing, Lord Reign In Me & Holy, Holy, Holy. Through a difficult season of health challenges and thinking his days at the front of the church were over, a dramatic revelation of God's sustaining power transformed everything. Out of that season came the modern day classic Everlasting God. Now with the wealth of those experiences behind him comes the declaration God My Rock.

This new 14-track worship release is made up of live worship songs.

Feature Video Transcript

The video is a subtitled version of the title track: ‘God My Rock’. Here are the lyrics:

When my heart is overwhelmed
I will look to You alone
God my rock, God my rock, God my rock
You will stand when others fall
You are faithful through it all
God my rock, God my rock, God my rock

In the blessing, in the pain
through it all You’ve never failed me

You are the strength of my heart
You are the strength of my heart
I can rely on You, I can rely on You
You are the joy of my life
You are my song in the night
There is no one as true
Jesus I trust in You

When I’ve struggled to believe
You have not let go of me
God my rock, God my rock, God my rock
Carried through the darkest storms
You have held me in Your arms
God my rock, God my rock, God my rock.

In Brief: Eden Video Transcript

'God My Rock is Brenton Brown's first live CD, which begs the question: why haven't there been any already? Well, perhaps the answer can be found in his relative naivety in terms of the commercialism of the music industry. Some franchises will produce two albums a year, whereas Brenton is a quality, not a quantity man. The result is that this album displays some of his best work, and is bound to have listeners calling for many more albums of its kind.'

Eden Article: Break It Down! ... A Track-By-Track Review

Our God Is Mercy - Brenton Brown urges worshippers to ‘lift up your eyes, lift up your eyes and sing!’ as he declares ‘Our God is mercy, our God is near!’ This track’s position as first on the CD makes so much sense - it’s a great introduction that reminds worshippers of the good character and closeness of God. Musically, it has a fairly typical rock/worship feel that includes electric guitars and simple chord patterns.

Joyful - Yes, it is the ‘Joyful’ we associate with Christmas: ‘Joyful, joyful, Lord we adore you’ but it comes with a twist. Played upbeat, and with extra lyrics by Brenton Brown, it has become a song of the joy we have a result of being rescued by Jesus. Also, great dynamics include two builds towards a big climax, the first of which is a quieter verse which serves to wake the worshipper up, going against the predictable route.

God My Rock - In this, the title track, a strong bass-led introduction leads into a stripped-back first verse. Building into the chorus, Brenton sings ‘You are the strength of my heart, You are the strength of my heart, I can rely on you, I can rely on you, You are the joy of my life, You are my song in the night, there is no one as true, Jesus I trust in You.’ These words stand out - listening to the track, I felt confident of Brenton’s integrity in singing this - he means every word.

Jesus, Take All of Me - This song is a refreshing change in tone. The lyrics are arranged in a very hymn-like way, using old English - I’m sure that once the album is released, we will discover where they are taken from. With simple, acoustic verses and a simple chorus to match, it sounds as much like a prayer as it does a song.

Send Us Out - Beginning with a prayer in which Brenton asks for the Lord’s blessing on the congregation gathered, this song flips between sections where the electric guitar, bass and drums are prominent and those where they are not. The bridge builds towards a climax and then relents, bringing worshippers back down to the prayerful mood present at the start of the song.

Wonderful Redeemer - A classic contemporary worship song, it starts with a call and response between worship leader and congregation of ‘wo-o-oh’s. Probably the most common word in this song is ‘you’ - as Brenton focuses on God, pointing worshippers in His direction inevitably leads to a number of repeated ‘you’s. In modern worship, songwriters are often accused of writing more about themselves than God, or being unclear about to whom the song is directed - there are no such clarity issues here.

Jesus My Victory (Communion Song) - Initially an acoustic-driven track, this song lapses into the classic rock/worship feel that is commonly found elsewhere on the album. While I found this a little frustrating, the lyrics are sound. ‘King of kings you laid body down, oh what love that let’s the lost be found, oh what sacrifice given for my gain, all who die in you will rise again.’

Praising Is Rising (Hosanna) - Probably the most well-known track on this album, co-written with Paul Baloche, this song is sung by churches worldwide. Brenton decides to sing it conventionally rather than going for any abstract remixes.

Word of God - This song is especially poignant for its message: that while everything else will pass away, the Word of God will endure. It’s quite a rare message to find in a worship song, but perhaps not so much for Brenton Brown - the trials and pain (of sickness and a miscarriage) he has endured add credibility to his words. He continues praising, recognising that God’s love is greater than his suffering, and His Word endures.

Humble King - This song has a beautiful acoustic feel, with tender harmonies forming lyrics that speak of both the humility we have before God, and the ways in which He is a humble King. When listening, I immediately found this song familiar - this was confirmed, as I discovered that it was first released back in 1999. While you may have heard it before, it is definitely worth hearing again.

Glorious - Another old Brenton Brown favourite, Glorious is a gift that the Church still enjoys. This song was written with Paul Baloche. This album will serve to spread the song and its message even further.

Like The Angels - Though this song starts with Brenton simply playing acoustic guitar and singing, one anticipates a big change in dynamic. The chorus is: ‘You make me soar like the angels, you let me walk on the water, you let me run with white horses, Jesus my strength when all is gone.’ Quietly worshipful, Brenton explores the miraculous sustaining and uplifting power of God in this song.

I Saw The Light - Clearly Brenton has been influenced by American music since relocating there. This track has an inescapable Southern Gospel sound reminiscent of the Gaithers - complete with a classic electric guitar solo, it follow the 12 bar blues chord pattern typical of this genre. A complete change of tack from the rest of the album, it is refreshing.

Everlasting God / How He Loves - More commonly known as ‘Strength Will Rise’, Brenton Brown ends with his most popular song yet released (it is currently in the top five songs most regularly sung by churches worldwide). Co-written with Ken Riley (frontman of the - now-retired - band YFriday), this song takes inspiration from Isaiah chapter 40, verses 28-31. Awe-inspiring verses and a brilliant song.

Brenton then integrates the song ‘How He Loves’ - written by John Mark MacMillan and popularised by Jesus Culture and the David Crowder*Band - into the song. This he does fantastically, much to pleasure of the now fired-up crowd of gathered worshippers.
