The findings have prompted serious concerns about the real-world consequences of online activities, extending far beyond the digital realm.
Eleanor Lyons stated that the BBC documentary exposed "deeply troubling evidence of coercion, exploitation, violence, financial control and indicators of human trafficking being reported to OnlyFans and occurring on the platform itself." She emphasised that the harms are "not simply about online content" but "real-world abuse and exploitation taking place offline against vulnerable individuals, many of them young women." Of particular concern, she noted, was the evidence relating to 'OnlyFans Managers' and agencies exercising extensive third-party control over individuals' accounts, finances, communications, and lives.
The investigation detailed how OFMs commonly took between 50% and 70% of creators' earnings, even after OnlyFans' own 20% platform fee. In some egregious cases, managers reportedly took 100% of earnings, lied about income, and even changed bank account details to divert funds directly. Managers routinely seized control of creators' logins and payment tools, effectively locking them out of their own income streams.
The pressure on creators to compromise their boundaries was also a significant finding. Approximately 83% of surveyed women reported being pressured to produce more explicit content than they were comfortable with. Furthermore, creators faced severe repercussions when attempting to extricate themselves from these management agreements, including threats, blackmail, and the initiation of legal action. The documentary also highlighted instances of physical violence, with one creator alleging strangulation and an attack by masked intruders after attempting to sever ties with her manager. Another creator reported a brick being thrown through her window, illustrating the terrifying reality faced by some on the platform.
Online forums used by managers revealed a disturbing culture of control, with shared 'control tips' advising tactics such as 'scare the bitch' or 'break something with a baseball bat.' This behaviour, coupled with the financial exploitation and threats, has led anti-slavery organisations to highlight patterns strongly suggestive of coercion, exploitation, and indicators of human trafficking.
In response to these alarming revelations, Eleanor Lyons has written to Dame Chi Onwurah, the chair of Parliament’s science, innovation, and technology committee, to formally request an inquiry. She has been joined by Tonia Antoniazzi MP, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Commercial Sexual Exploitation, in calling for a thorough examination into the "extent and nature of exploitation" on OnlyFans. The inquiry is expected to scrutinise OnlyFans' accountability and the broader regulatory landscape, with advocacy groups like CARE and Unseen urging stronger protections against modern slavery and online exploitation.
