Chelmsford Salvation Army Marks 140 Years of Community Service

The Salvation Army in Chelmsford is celebrating a remarkable milestone this weekend, marking 140 years of continuous service to the city. From Saturday 27th to Sunday 28th June, a special series of events are planned to bring together past and present members, local residents, and community partners.

The celebrations kicked off in Central Park on Saturday morning, with church members participating in the Chelmsford Park Run, echoing The Salvation Army's historical practice of engaging directly with the community on the streets.

Throughout Saturday, the Baddow Road church hosted a vibrant community festival. Attendees enjoyed a range of family activities, including face painting and a treasure hunt, alongside historical displays, music workshops, and a shared community meal. Live entertainment and a silent disco added to the festive atmosphere, offering everyone a chance to connect with the organisation's rich 140-year history in Chelmsford.

Sunday's events focused on worship, prayer, and thanksgiving, culminating in the unveiling of a specially commissioned artwork designed to commemorate this significant anniversary.

Majors Allister and Kathleen Versfeld, who lead The Salvation Army in Chelmsford, expressed their joy at reaching this milestone. "Reaching 140 years is a remarkable milestone," said Major Kathleen Versfeld. "It gives us the opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved through the dedication of generations of Salvationists, volunteers and supporters who have served the people of Chelmsford. We want this weekend to be a celebration not just for us, but for the wider community."

Founded in 1886, The Salvation Army has consistently adapted its services through periods of significant social change. Major Allister Versfeld reflected on the organisation's enduring presence: "The world has changed enormously over the last 140 years, but the message of hope that inspires us remains the same. We believe there is always hope, even in difficult circumstances, and we want to continue sharing the hope we have in Jesus Christ with the people of Chelmsford for many years to come."
