      Product Description

The Mexica (popularly known as the Aztecs) held power in Mexico in the 14th - 16th centuries just before Hernan Cortez conquered the area. They are best known for their sacrificial practices that appear shocking to today's world. "Time and Sacrifice in the Aztec Cosmos" makes sense of these practices in a way that moves the reader beyond their shock value. As strange as these practices may appear to people today, they made sense to the Mexica. For them, every living being was timed by a given life span and sacrifice's destruction was an unavoidable part of that life. In the Mexica universe, time and sacrifice could not be understood without each other. Indeed, it might be argued that they were even identical, for sacrifice was the mechanism by which time functioned. It was sacrifice that caused things to move, take shape, and change. Without destructive, death-dealing sacrificial acts, creative life-giving acts were not possible.Life without the carefully timed transformative capabilities of sacrifice was unthinkable, and sacrificial models permeated all facets of Mexica life. The simple act of eating itself was considered sacrificial.Humans were sometimes offered up in life-transforming rituals, but more frequently a large variety of animals, corn, and amaranth cakes were the honorary meals that sustained Mexica life. This introduction to the Mexica explores sacrifice as an essential foundation for and an ethical response to existence in the richly textured world of the Mexica. A glossary is included for readers unfamiliar with the Mexica and an appendix for those interested in a more technical explanation of the highly intricate Mexica calendrical system.
